Roof struts purlins. Purlins are placed under rafters in a perpendicular position on edge not flat. Purlins are 2 by 4 feet and are installed much like metal roofing. Roof struts the struts are needed in the roof frame to transfer the loads from underpurlins and other beams to the load bearing walls. The purlins run at right angles to the rafters the associated struts are positioned under every forth or so rafter to attach to a joist above a supporting wall below.

Purlins are installed horizontally under metal roofs. Hangers in conjunction with a longitudinal binder running at right angles to the joists are used to help hold the ceiling up. These roof purlins are extensively used in large sized roofing platforms factory workshops godowns and many industrial sheds. Purlins are specific to the roof.

The type and spacing of purlins is a design consideration which depends upon the incident roof loads as well as the limiting lengths of sheeting to be used. They should have anti slip blocks where necessary to prevent them sliding horizontally. In structural steel or aluminum construction purlins usually w shapes or channels transfer roof loads to the major structural elements supporting the roof. They are one directional and bolt downhill of the clip.
