The patter or even the roar of falling rain or hail popping and cracking noises perhaps due to thermal expansion and contraction of roof coverings metal roofing or roof structure and transmitted noises from other external sources such as low flying aircraft or nearby trains or auto truck traffic from a nearby highway.

At night attic can sometime make loud creaking and cracking sounds. At night the outdoor temperature lowers and the wood contracts.
The wood frame under your roof experiences temperature changes from the outdoor air because the attic does not receive much heating or air conditioning. It can ofter sound as if the roof is broken in some way or the roof is going to collapse. The sun shines on your roof all day warming the tiles and sub roof. The sun hits your roof and heats it up.
Popping cracking and snapping sounds coming from their roofs especially when the colder weather hits is a common problem. As your house quiets down at night and the temperatures fall the cooling of your roof components can often be heard. Or when it has come loose. Banging sounds generally occur when a part of the roof has not been properly fixed in place.
Creaking wheezing or popping sounds happen at nighttime due to cooler weather. The sound can be present both in mild weather and heavy winds. The creaking sound is perfectly normal and is caused by the movement of roof timbers responding to changes in temperature.
